The Coolest Thing...

For those of you that don't know, I live in Rockport and drive to my store in Port Aransas everyday, which means I have to cross the ferry every single day. In the stretch from Aransas Pass to the actual ferry landing I always see people fishing in the mornings. Sometimes I see kayakers out at the Lighthouse Lakes setting out to silently approach and hopefully catch the drum that live in the lakes, other times I see motorized bay boats zooming out to what they hope will be their 'hot spot' for the day, and then there are always people parked along the shore casting off the sand. Well today I saw the coolest thing since January when I started making this drive everyday. I saw a white SUV parked along the shore with the driver standing by the hood casting out into the water. Not that special really, I have seen this a thousand time. The thing that really made me smile when I saw this scene was the person standing their casting was a woman! This lady was out there all by herself fishing! I think that is the coolest thing ever and it basically sums up why I started Pink Marlin! There are a lot of women out there just like the lady I saw fishing today. I am one of these women and I am sure if you are reading this blog that you are too or you know someone who is.

I remember one time in particular that I went fishing by myself.  I didn't have to work the next day I was just planning to hang around the house and catch up on all those fun activities like laundry, dishes, etc. It was at dinner that night I told one of my friends I wanted to go fishing. He said, "Then go." Duh! Why wasn't I going fishing on my day off? Because I didn't have anyone to go with? Who needs someone to go with! I enjoyed fishing and I wanted to go so I made the decision to go.  I called my dad to ask if I could use his boat that next morning. Of course he said yes because my dad is always so great like that. So the next morning I woke up early (still not a huge fan of this part of fishing), went and got coffee, a taco, and shrimp. It was hilarious when I walked into the convenience store because all the other fishermen were there getting their coffee and then there was me, the only girl, but I didn't care. I was going fishing. I went back to the house and got the boat ready, lowered the lift, and took off on my fishing trip. As soon as I got out there I started to head to my destination and trying to read the channel markers. I will admit I did get a little turned around at the start but soon I got back on track and was off to Carlos Fingers to catch some fish! It definitely got a little sketchy in some areas and I don't think I ever took my eyes off the depth finder. So I was out there fishing, not catching anything, but still enjoying myself when I saw this guy run his boat aground. I couldn't help but laugh just a little, at least I hadn't done that. After a couple hours of hitting different spots around the Fingers, I decided to head home and stop on some spots on the way. I think I caught a hammerhead and a skip jack that day. Not exactly your prize fish, but when I got back to the dock I was so happy! I had a great time fishing, even if  I didn't catch what I wanted. I also felt so proud of myself. I didn't need anyone to take me fishing. It was something I loved to do and something I now knew I could do on my own.

And that is why I started Pink Marlin and why I continue to fall in love the concept of Pink Marlin each and every day. I think it is so neat when I see a woman fishing, whether she is by herself, with other women, or with some of the guys, she's out there doing it!

When I see something like I saw this morning it just reminds me there are a lot of women out there just like me. And that is the biggest idea and belief behind the Pink Marlin brand.

Pink Marlin & Port Aransas

This coming Sunday (4/15/12) Dallas News will run a news article featuring Port Aransas, TX. In this article the freelance write June Naylor recalls her childhood memories of visiting Port A with her family and examines how it has changed and how it has stayed the same.

Pink Marlin is THRILLED to be mentioned as one of the shops in this article. And not only are we mentioned as one of the shops but we are also called a favorite! Click here to read the article. We especially appreciate the face that Ms. Naylor realizes the high quality of our t-shirts, as this is something we keep a priority when deciding on our orders.

Happy reading!

Busy... Busy... Busy...

It's not even summertime yet and already so much is happening!

The planning for the Texas Women Anglers Tournament has begun. It was so amazing last year and I hope it goes just as well this year. We are in the process of picking out trophies for the tournament and let me tell you, they are going to be AWESOME! We finally got our new website for the tournament up and going. You can check it out here. Make plans to attend this tournament because it is always fun PLUS it supports a great cause. The Women's Shelter of Corpus Christi received $10,500.00 from our tournament last year! Thank you to all of our participants for this!

Another new and exciting thing has happened since the last time I posted. I am now the Treasurer of the Corpus Christi Big Game Fishing Club or CCBGFC for short. (I think I have finally learned how to say that as fast as the other members!) This is another great thing to take part in if you aren't already! The CCBGFC puts on 10 tournaments during the fishing season, some are concurrent with other major tournaments and some are stand alone tournaments. At the end of the year the club host their annual awards banquet. We have lots of new ideas and exciting things that will be happening with the club this year so you don't want to miss out on this either! You can visit their website here. Pink Marlin is a trophy sponsor for the club (I believe we sponsored the first place boat last year). We are always looking for new sponsors and it is a great cause that is local (which is really nice!). If you know of anyone that might be interested in sponsoring or joining the club send them our way. :)

I have finally updated the tournament schedule on Pink Marlin's website. Click here to check out the tournaments I have listed for the upcoming year. I am still working on the tournaments outside of Texas but those will follow shortly. I can't wait for all the tournaments this year! It is going to be an awesome year of fishing and fun and I hope you all will join me!

Fish on,

Grand Opening Preview

It's Almost Here!!!
March 10th - Our Grand Opening

When I made the decision to open an actual store for Pink Marlin I had so many people ask me if I thought there was a market for women's fishing apparel. HELLO?!?! Have you seen the women kicking butt in the fishing industry!?! Obviously it's not as huge as the market for men's fishing apparel, but it does exists. All these comments made me that much more ready to open the store. See I know there are women like me out there that love fishing and are always looking for women's fishing apparel. It's so hard to find! What do I hope to accomplish by opening my store? Well, I want to promote women anglers and women fishing in the industry. I want to team up with other businesses and people that share the same interest as me. I think this is a great industry and I believe us women can become very dominant in it. It's not about women's rights issues or anything like that. It's about women who love to fish plain and simple!  So you see, my goal behind Pink Marlin is not to just be another clothing store. But to be a dominant face in the fishing industry. I want Pink Marlin to not only be about women's fishing apparel but also about promoting the women who wear the clothes. I want to create a presence for women all over who fish. I want to share their stories on my website and their photos (http://www.mypinkmarlin.com/photos_stories.cfm) I want to write articles that interest women in the fishing industry, and most of all I want to get more women involved!!! And that is why I am so excited about my GRAND OPENING of Pink Marlin in Port Aransas, TX. I hope to meet a lot of women who share my same passion and promote the women's fishing industry!
